one is the federal and state grants that come into the city to city college. so this is actually based on their most recent financial statement for 2010-2011. in that year they received 188 million in grants. the other impact we looked at was on city employers. so, we were able to match students graduating from city college programs and the most recent data we had was the academic year of 2010-2011 to the u.s. department of labor data to match those programs. in many cases they were a match to those programs. in some cases we had to estimate. so in last year in 2011 we are comparing more than 2200 graduates that had and were as degrees that were not going on to school or some kind of certificate which is a licensed vocational program which is a specific skill. so for 52 programs, i need to say also about u.s. department of labor data. it also covers marine county and san mateo county. we included these areas so we are looking at the whole picture. using those three schools, in 4152 programs, job demand, annual job demand far exceeded the skills labor that was

it is time i think for our city to think more creatively about what city hall can do to support city college . in this time of need we held a hearing of the budget committee last week where we started to think about in-kind support, whether the electricity or water bills, but also in-kind support for elections of the trustees of the college board system. also other ideas for how we can be more supportive. my hope is, after this resolution, i hope that is passed . overwhelmingly here at the board and we can put our heads together i know the mayor and the controller and others also sat down with the former chancellor and others last year at this time to come forward to provide some economic and management support as well. but my hope is that we continue to move after we have acted on this resolution. first that the resolution calls the college to use as much funds to the ballot opposition prop a, to use resources for classroom use and acknowledges is amended that achieving accreditation , is so critical for the institution and a healthy, adequate reserve is also critical. in short the

city college is a staple of education within the city. we don't only want to see city college saved. we want to see city college improved. we want to see city college addressing some of the historic issues of racial inequity, the achievement gap for students of color, especially african-american students, the amount of time that it takes students to graduate when they get into city college. so, we were really would like to see you take leadership in bringing the community together to build more support around saving city college, while most definitely including the fact we need to strive to improve the situations at city college that aren't working for students to make them successful. there's a lot of pressure to have a narrative that doesn't include equity and i want to most definitely make sure that as we continue to speak about this that we talk about equity. we put students at the center of the conversation and really make sure that it's guided by what's going to make sure students get the most out of their education at city college.
